Six criteria that you can use to determine whether a project is worth it.

If you’re a contractor or homeowner looking to renovate your home, you’ll want to make sure that every project you take on is worth your time and effort. This can be done by creating your buy box! A buy box is a set of criteria that you use to decide whether a project is worth pursuing or not. Here are the six items we use to figure this out:

1. Price point. How much are you willing to spend on a project? Keep in mind that the higher you go, the less competition you'll have.

2. Location. How far are you willing to drive to a project? Is the property located near a main road or airport? These are all factors that can impact your decision.

3. Age range. The older the home, the more obsolete materials you'll encounter and the more work you'll have to do. Be sure to factor this into your decision-making process.

“Creating your buy box is not a solo endeavor—lean heavily on your team.”

4. Exclusions and features. For example, are you willing to take on a property that has solar panels or a pool? Is there something functionally obsolete about the layout of the property?

5. Property type. Is it a single-family home, a townhome, or a condo? Keep in mind that a condo could mean carting materials up three floors, and you'll need to be mindful of working hours if there are neighbors.

6. Scope of work. Are you aiming for a light remodel or do you want to take on structural changes? Be sure to factor in the time and resources required for each project.

Remember that creating your buy box is not a solo endeavor. Lean heavily on your team, and don't hesitate to reach out to us by phone call or email if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing from you!
